Each year, more than 250 families in Western PA hear the words, “Your child has cancer” – beginning a quiet, daily battle to understand the disease, hold on to hope, pay the bills, and help their children fight. Since 1987, Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Network of Western PA has been committed to helping families do just that. Started by several parents who had recently lost children to cancer, they were keenly aware of the devastation of diagnosis and the challenges of treatment, and chose to honor their children’s memories by channeling their grief into something positive for others. More than 20 years later, many of these parents remain active in Candlelighters of Western PA. An all-volunteer group, we work to give help, hope, and encouragement to other families. |
